OMG, Stacy! This book sounds fantastic. Just ordered it at my library. I'd love to link to your post in this month's NatureStack, if that's okay w/ you.
It is truly one of my favorites and it can be read quickly with pure enjoyment or with a greater eye to the craft of its simplicity. I like the underlying "truth" of the story which makes many people uncomfortable.
Coming back for an update. I loved reading this. You are so right about the feel of it. Both magical/mythic and utterly realistic -- how did he conjure that balance? I finished it nearly two months ago and it's still on my mind. I can see why you reread it.
"...I feel so sure about an individual’s relationship with nature that her voice is not just a possibility but a palpable presence."
I absolutely get this surety, and that voice seems to be the central premise of The Bear. In the book the words of Nature's voice are written down so everyone can access it.
Sarah, you bring such warmth to my heart. I read your reply and was like, where did that quote from? Like, who wrote that and I reread the essay... ahh, I did that? Maybe I am learning ...
As it relates to The Bear, we really should spend more time listening.

I am appreciative of the support you continue to share with me. I have much to learn from you.

When you decide to reread, you will learn even more. Yes, there is a craft practice there worthy of evaluation.
Adding to my list, thank you!🐻
I'd love you know what you think after reading.
